Travel Insurance
Did you know that most medical plans offered in the U.S. will not provide coverage if you have an incident outside of the U.S.?
We highly recommend Travel insurance!
Travel Insurance – Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance is a protection plan that helps reimburse you for unexpected costs before, during, or after your trip. This may include cancellations, medical expenses, travel delays, lost bags, or emergency situations.
2. Why should I purchase travel insurance?
Unexpected events happen. Travel insurance can protect your investment, cover emergency medical care, and give you peace of mind. It’s one of the best ways to avoid financial loss if plans change.
3. When should I buy travel insurance?
Ideally within 14–21 days of your initial trip deposit.
Purchasing within 24 hours of placing a deposit or booking is a common requirement when purchasing a policy that includes a "Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)" benefit.
4. What does travel insurance typically cover?
Coverage varies by plan, but commonly includes:
- Trip cancellation or interruption
- Travel delays and missed connections
- Lost, damaged, or delayed baggage
- Emergency medical and dental
- Emergency evacuation and repatriation (transportation back to your home in the U.S. in the event of a medical situation)
- Accidental death and dismemberment
- 24/7 travel assistance services
- Translation services
- Pre-trip concierge services
5. What is NOT covered?
Typical exclusions include:
- International acts or reckless behavior
- Traveling against medical advice
- Certain pre-existing medical conditions (unless waived)
- Fear of travel (unless SFAR is purchased)
- Routine medical check-ups
- Non-documented claims or falsified receipts
Always review your plan details to understand coverage limits.
6. What is a pre-existing condition waiver?
Some plans allow coverage for pre-existing medical conditions if you purchase insurance within a certain time window after your first trip deposit (usually 14–21 days) and meet eligibility requirements.
7. What is Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)?
CFAR is an optional upgrade that allows you to cancel your trip for any reason not otherwise covered, typically reimbursing 50–75% of your trip cost. It must usually be purchased:
- Within 14-21 days of your initial deposit
- For 100% of your trip cost
- Before final payments or other deadlines
8. Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?
Most modern plans include COVID-19 as a covered illness, similar to any other medical condition. However, “fear of travel” or government border closures are typically not covered unless you have CFAR.
9. Does my credit card’s travel insurance replace a full policy?
Credit card protection is great but often limited. Many cards cover only:
- Trip cancellation up to certain limits
- Lost or delayed baggage
- Rental car damage
They usually do NOT cover:
- Emergency medical
- Medical evacuations
- CFAR
- High cancellation amounts
A standalone policy provides much broader protection.
10. Can I buy travel insurance after booking?
Yes! You can purchase coverage up to the day before departure. However, specialty benefits (like CFAR and pre-existing condition coverage) often require buying early.
11. How do I file a claim?
You’ll submit documentation through the insurer’s claims portal. This may include:
- Receipts
- Doctor statements
- Flight delay notices
- Proof of expenses
- Booking confirmations
If you booked through Trip List Vacations, I can help guide you through the process.
12. Can multiple travelers be on one policy?
Yes. Family members or travel companions can be insured together as long as they live in the same state and meet policy requirements.
13. How much does travel insurance cost?
Typically 4–10% of your total trip cost. Factors include age, destination, trip price, and coverage level.
14. Is travel insurance refundable?
Most policies offer a short “free look” period, usually 10–15 days, during which you can cancel your policy for a full refund (as long as the trip hasn’t started and no claims have been filed).
15. How do I know which plan is right for me?
Consider:
- Trip cost & non-refundable expenses
- Medical coverage needs
- Destination requirements
- Age & Health
- Whether you'd like CFAR flexibility
